稲荷寿司の歴史

Inari sushi became popular in Japan during the Edo period (late 18th century). Named after the Shinto kami Inari—linked with fertility and business—Inari shrines are often associated with foxes. Folklore says foxes love aburaage (sweet seasoned fried tofu), so tofu pouches were left as offerings. Later, people started filling those pouches with sushi rice, creating inari sushi: the classic sweet tofu "pocket" of rice.
